It was 20 years ago today when @30centbike and a few other goofballs started off on the first 325 mile #TransIowa gravel race. I had been living in Oregon for 5 years at that point working as a bike courier and had just built my first frame a few months prior. I don’t have any photos of the 2005 race setup and raced the bike without paint. I had an iPod mini, a cycle computer, cue sheets and 6 pockets full of food and a jacket. I rode the whole route in 23 hrs. My brain is fuzzy on the details but I remember water crossings, eating a burger from my jersey pocket at 3 am and there only being a few people at the end.

I promptly ate some food and passed out on the floor at a friend’s house in Decorah. No trophy or fanfare. When I got back to my parent’s farm, I scooped up some gravel and put in this jar as my trophy. It collects dust above my lathe now next to some other random artifacts.

The photos of the grey bike are from the 2007 race which I also won. (No one finished in 2006 due to weather) In the summer in 2005, I had the frame painted orange with white panels. The summer of 2006 I rode STP with some friends when I was hit by a car causing the top tube and downtube to fail on the bike. I was fine but the bike needed some love. It took me weeks to look at it but I finally cut the frame apart and replaced both tubes and repainted it grey and silver. The next spring I went back to the Trans Iowa and won again on the refreshed bike.

It was a time and riding 50 miles feels like a good day out now. I’m happy to have the memories and still love a good pedal.

Lucas’s new adventure frameset back from the cookies-n-cream treatment at @colorworkspalette this week. Built with @paragonmachine Z couplers and UDH dropouts. Fillet brazed with @columbus_official tubing and made for anything.

Also, next Friday evening @pdxtrophycup and @backyardblam are throwing (up?!) a goldsprints roller race at @chriskingbuzz to help out local Taco Bell legend, @papatong! Come out and have fun!

Lucas’s new All Road bikepacking travel rig is ready for paint. This is the first time using the @paragonmachine Z Couplers and UDH rear dropouts. This also features a nifty rear light mount and a carbon fork from @wilde.bikes. I made a front bag support to keep the @revelatedesigns bag off the headtube on rough trails.

Ten speed heroes.

I built a bike for @matthallartpdx almost two decades ago that has seen many miles but it’s limited tire options forced it to sit on the wall until I made a new fork and modified the frame to fit long reach brakes. Fresh paint, old parts and boom! It’s ready for action.

The white steed is meant to go the distance. On the road and in a case! I’ll be headed to Belgium in a few weeks with this bike. All used 10v parts I had around and made to be versatile and fun. Road miles? Sure! Impromptu CX race? Yes! Light gravel tour? Sign me up!

Like the photo that @etharfurning snapped long ago, it makes me happy to have friends like Matt no matter the road or trail conditions.

This bird flies! @spikeandwave stopped by after his first real ride on his new bike and it checks all the boxes! Dirty 30 capable. Handled Logie Trail climb like a champ. Screaming fast on Skyline all the way back to town.
Seeing bikes like this after a real ride makes me so grateful for the people who commission my skills. Thank you for riding!
